My very first time at The Mark was when a friend of mine and I decided to make a day in the UES by going to the Met Museum during the day and dinner at The Mark. We got there around 9 pm for dinner. Given that we were going to spend all day at the Met., I decided to wear jeans and a simple top and sneakers (yes! We were doing the scavenger hunt at the Met., so I needed to be comfortable most importantly because I wanted to win.) When we got there, my outfit felt less than adequate. Everyone there was elegantly dressed, and here I come walking in with jeans on. My first thought was “… dammit, either I will get kicked out or they will give me the stink eye… ”. I decided to gather all my courage and walk in, the girl greeted me with the biggest and warmest smile I have ever seen. I give my name and she asks me what kind of table I would prefer. She never once looked at me funny; in fact, no one there looked at me funny, all I got were big welcoming smiles. That, I thought is the best kind of customer service and made me even more excited to try their food.
For an appetizer, I always, always order the Crispy Sushi. This is THE dish to order if you visit The Mark. The reason it is called Crispy Sushi is because the rice is deep fried. So when you take a bite into it, you get both the crunchy texture and the smooth texture of the raw fish. It is an absolute delight to eat. The sauce that comes with this dish isn’t the typical soy sauce; it has a bit of sweetness to it. It’s very good for dipping the pieces in.
For the entrée, since I was there for brunch, I ordered their Eggs Benedict. It came very simply done, English muffin at the bottom, topped with cooked ham, and garnished with cherry tomato and potato.
The eggs were cooked perfectly, the yolk was not runny but moist and the hollandaise sauce was buttery. I actually had them bring me a side of hollandaise sauce so I could dip the potatoes in it. For the drink, I ordered their house made fresh Ginger Ale. This was my very first fresh Ginger Ale and it was so delicious that I finished it in 15 minutes and ordered a second one. Two things here are a must: the crispy sushi and their house made soda, so good that your mouth will water every time you think of it, like I am now…
I’ve been there a few times for dinner as well and I love the night ambiance. It’s super dim, very romantic, but going with friends is fine as well. They have a huge wine list so pairing isn’t an issue. They also have outdoor seating that seats about 10 which is very cute and cozy. On a nice day, outdoor seating will be so much fun! All in all, The Mark is a restaurant for someone who likes good service, good food and a mellow ambiance. If you are visiting NYC, this would definitely be one of the restaurants you should visit, even if you are in jeans.
