One of my favorite jewels is the cameo. It is one of the most beautiful historical jewels ever made and still is favored by a lot of women in the present day. Historically, it is worn by women of aristocratic decent. It is a statement of class.
History of Cameo – Cameos are typically made from semi-precious gemstones, shells, glass or ivory. One of the oldest stone cameos are made in Greece dating back the 3rd century BC. Cameos were also very popular in Ancient Rome especially during the time of Augustus. From there, it migrated to France where Napoleon populated and England during King George III and Queen Victoria’s reign. Cameos were so popular at one point that “… even the coronation crowns were decorated with Cameos…” . Now to get our hands on one of those cameos would be near impossible and if it was possible, the value would be ginormous. So I suggest getting some of our Modern day Cameos.
Modern day Cameos are made by ultrasonic machines so multiples of the same design can be mass-produced. Most of the time, one can only afford the mass-produced ones as the very old ones made of ivory, stones or shells are considered antiques and have un-affordable price tags. However, due to limited Cameo artists in the present day, only portraits are hand carved.
The meaning of Cameo is actually a method of carving. So, in essence, anything can be carved and called a Cameo. It just depends what type of Cameo you would like. If you love Cameos as much as I do, a few ways of searching for them would be by going to flea markets, consignment stores, even on ebay. I’ve found a few nice pieces on ebay and have bought them. They were of great quality. Just make sure to do your researches ahead of time. The below picture is a collection of all of my Cameos. I’ve bought the 3 pins through a flea market and they were a GREAT buy.
My friend Eda Lourdes just launched her Fall Collection of accessories and she has a few amazing Cameo pieces. All of her pieces denote the old Parisienne flavor. It’s something you would see a young lady wear on the streets of Paris and New York. Her line is young, stylish and chic; anyone can wear them and will instantly look chic. Take a look at her website and you will want to buy all of them!!
